5 Announcements from the 2017 Microsoft Event

Soon Microsoft will be riding Apple’s coattails to the bank. At this year’s Microsoft Event in Redmond, Washington, Microsoft showcased its visionary outlook on Windows as a platform with powerful introductions to the Surface Studio, the Surface Book, and the future of HoloLens technology in the hands of consumers.

Let’s recap five of the biggest – and let’s face it, most awesome – announcements from Microsoft’s headquarters.

5 Announcements from the 2017 Microsoft Event

#1 Surface Studio and Surface Dial

Surface Studio
When you first see the Surface Studio, you might think, “Hey, Apple’s coming out with a new desktop!” Offering a 4.5k ultra HD screen, the Surface Studio surpasses anything a 4k display or TV can do now.
A convertible desktop, you can adjust the screen in a variety of ways to get the most out of the work space.
Coupled with the Surface Dial, this peripheral device allows you to work with any Surface device, including the Studio, to navigate through Windows 10 more intuitively than ever before.

#2 Surface Book

Surface Book
Three new Surface Book models were introduced, featuring 6th generation Intel Core i7 processors. Microsoft is fond of Intel and has always worked hand-in-hand to bring out the absolute best in performance with its Surface line.
With 16 hours of battery life, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another tablet/laptop hybrid that performs at this speed for this long.

#3 Windows 10 Creators Update

We can expect the latest major update to the Windows 10 operating system in spring of 2017. Like the Anniversary Update in July 2016, this update will roll out free to all Windows 10 users.
It’ll (hopefully) bring 3D cutting edge technology to the operating system, a bold promise from Microsoft to make 3D and augmented reality an integrated component of the Windows platform.
Microsoft hopes Edge will be the first browser to bring a fully immersive 3D experience to consumers with support for Office and Paint coming, too.

#4 Windows MyPeople

As part of the Windows 10 Creators Update, Windows 10 users will get an immersive iMessage experience on the OS for the first time since its introduction to the market. MyPeople will allow consumers to pin favorite contacts to their taskbar, then message and share files instantly.
This is a feature that consumers have been asking to be part of Windows for over 15 years, so it’s a much-welcomed addition to Windows 10.

#5 VR Headsets

VR headsets
With 3D and augmented reality coming with the Windows 10 Creators Update, it only makes sense that Microsoft would begin competing in the VR headset world.
artnering with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, these companies will work with Microsoft to begin shipping virtual reality headsets to consumers. These headsets will feature six degrees of freedom and a simple setup for consumers to dive into the virtual world around them.

Conclusion

One of the things that Microsoft has failed to do for over a decade is capture the imagination of the world around it. It’s playing catch up with Apple now and this year’s Microsoft Event showcased some of that imagination, innovation, and spark that made Microsoft a consumer staple.
With the addition of 3D to the Windows family, the Surface Studio, and its dive into the VR world, Microsoft looks to get back to innovation in the tech world.
